Vigilante, city style: judge, jury, and executioner.

Comments: Maybe I'm the only one, but I really wish Charles Bronson would have killed his son-in-law along with all of the thugs. The guy was annoying as hell, and I wanted to punch him every time he referred to Bronson as "Dad" (which was a lot). And how easy was it to get mugged in New York in the '70s? Apparently it was pretty goddamn easy. But other than that, Death Wish is a pretty awesome film. Now I just need to find a good price on Death Wish II through Death Wish V...

Comments: I don't really care that Mel Gibson has slowly turned psychotic. He's a great director (although there is a rumor that Leonardo DiCaprio just dropped out of his newest film because of... well, you can figure that out), and even though he rarely acts anymore, he's been in so many good films over the years. So what if he threatened to kill his girlfriend and burn down her house. At least he's actually fucking crazy and not the "kooky" type of crazy like Tom Cruise (I am being sarcastic, for those that think that I'm psychotic). Anyway, Edge of Darkness is a rather solid film based on the acclaimed '80s British miniseries (which I think I'm going to order soon, based on how awesome it's supposed to be). It's a very "heavy" film in parts, where it felt like the writers were trying to cram all of the miniseries into a two hour film. But otherwise, Edge of Darkness is an engaging thriller, and a pretty entertaining one at that.

When the moon is full the legend comes to life.

[IMDb]

Comments: Original review: I had been interested in The Wolfman since I first saw the trailer. I've never seen the original, but I liked the actors involved as well as the feel of the film, which looked like a gothic period piece. However, many reviewers stated The Wolfman was very average, so I really lost most of my interest this week. If a number of my friends weren't going tonight, I probably would have waited until the film came out on DVD. Luckily, I did enjoy the updated version. It's certainly no classic, and I doubt it will ever be revered as George Waggner's original Wolf Man, but it was certainly passable and worth a watch. While I'm a big fan of Benicio Del Toro, I found his portrayal of Lawrence Talbot to be a bit bland. He's generally better in supporting roles; in The Wolfman he failed to garner much of any empathy and I never truly felt his plight to the fullest. The biggest question I had was why Universal didn't decide to neuter the film to gain a PG-13 rating. There's no language or nudity, just some vicious violence (that I definitely enjoyed). These days, however, the naughty things are cut out for the theatrical run only to be inserted in the TOTALLY UNRATED cut on DVD (which ended up being the case anyway). Oh well, it's nice to see they decided to release the film as intended.

Daybreakers (2009)

Daybreakers (2009)

Running Time: 98 Minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Viewed: Owned DVD

[IMDb]

Comments: The Spierig Brothers, seven years after releasing their enjoyable debut Undead, have finally released their follow-up, Daybreakers. Undead was a wonderful low-budget zombie film that I feel is criminally underrated and a fine film (with the exception of the horribly tacked-on second ending). Daybreakers, while being just as inventive as the brothers' first film, doesn't quite measure up. I did enjoy the film, but even though it's an original screenplay, there's quite a few clichéd moments. However, there's some solid gore (always a plus!) and any vampire movie that isn't about teenagers is a good thing (although Ethan Hawke's character is named Edward - go Team Edward!). The acting is passable, although Willem Dafoe's southern accent is a tad annoying and unrealistic. Still, Daybreakers is an entertaing movie, and if you're a (true) fan of vampire films, you'll probably enjoy this. Or you won't, and you'll think I'm an asshole.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

Directed by: Niels Arden Oplev
Screenplay by: Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg

Genre: Crime | Mystery | Thriller
Running Time: 152 Minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Viewed: Owned DVD

[IMDb]

Comments: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been all the rage lately; it's consistently been in the top ten on Amazon over the past few weeks, so that made me even more intrigued to see the film. And it's a pretty solid thriller, and mostly lived up to its hype. The film is a bit long in the tooth at times, and often reminded me of David Fincher's Zodiac (perhaps that's why he was tapped to helm the American version due out December of next year). There's a lot of investigative work which tends to draw the film out a bit; it's also got a very long first act (but that in turn helps give the characters an extensive background and depth). It's really well directed, and features a great score and excellent cinematography. I'm very intrigued to see the remaining two chapters, which have already been filmed (although the end of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo really isn't that open-ended; after reading the summary of The Girl Who Played with Fire it seems as though our fearless leads embark on another, separate investigation). Anywho, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a solid film that may or may not live up to your personal hype. Regardless, it's still good.

Running Time: 102 Minutes
MPAA Rating: Not Rated

Things in New York are about to go down the toilet...

[IMDb]

Comments: Let's not mince words here, but Street Trash is probably the greatest film ever made. It's a great combination of something Troma would produce along with everything that was great (or horrible, depending on your perspective) about the '80s. The funny part about the film is that most of it really has nothing to do with the Viper beverage that melts/implodes everyone. If you watch the original Street Trash short film (I flipped through it quickly after the film; it's on Disc 2 of the "Meltdown Edition"), it contains most of the scenes of horror and violence that are in the feature film. However, a large subplot (or now the main story) was inserted about a Vietnam veteran who terrorized other bums in a junkyard, and it really has nothing to do with horror or the concept that Street Trash was marketed on. Despite the fact the film isn't exactly as advertised, it's still an interesting foray into trash films of the 1980s, and a pretty entertaining one at that.

Comments: Perhaps it was the fact that the show and the characters had time to fully grow on me, or perhaps this season was better than the first, but the second series of The IT Crowd was some funny shit. The first episode, "The Work Outing," had me rolling laughing and was definitely the best episode throughout the first two seasons. The others are pretty great too, and all-in-all Season 2 of The IT Crowd was pretty great.

Comments: While I'm not the biggest reader, I will admit to loving the so-called "fratire" genre. I've read several books filled crazy stories and antics, but none have made me laugh (to literally the point of tears) like Tucker Max's "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell." I fucking loved that book. However, I was very hesitant to see a film adaptation, because everything about this screamed "awful!" (plus the fact that it was shit on by just about everyone didn't help). But I must say, after waiting for so long to finally watch the film, I thought it was pretty decent. Sure, there's entirely too much sexism and woman-bashing at the beginning (to the point where I just wanted to yell at the director to "get on with it!" during some scenes), and after a while it stops being Tucker Max's book and starts becoming every other college-esque movie ever made (lots of drunken craziness, some character gets angry at the main character, main character must make sweeping apology to end the film while making everyone friends again), but I actually enjoyed myself. I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell really won't be most people's cup of tea, but I didn't think it was so terrible. Or maybe I'm just an asshole.

Comments: I've heard a lot about The IT Crowd over the last few months. I finally decided to pick up the first three seasons from Amazon UK for around $15 (it would have cost me that much for just one season here in the US). I won't lie, I was a little let down by the first episode. I expected the show to be different, and possibly more about computers and having to fix things (the show has a bit more of a traditional sitcom feel at times, where what the characters do is just the backdrop for the crazy story of the week). But, after my initial reaction, I started to love the show. It got funnier and funnier as the season went on; I can see myself re-watching the show multiple times in the future, and enjoying it more and more each time. The IT Crowd is a great show that will hopefully only get better for me... and it most certainly should.

No actors. No script. No escape.

Comments: First, there should be no reason for me to explain why I rented this movie. It's a horror film, and it's about a bunch of naked chicks running around (tattooed and pierced chicks, at that). And the first half of the film isn't half bad, simply because it's more like the behind-the-scenes of a photo shoot rather than a horror movie. But soon, people start disappearing, and the Suicide Girls must start acting! Trust me, that's the real horror here. Anyway, there's never much of a plot or anything interesting here; once peeps start disappearing all that happens is the girls argue about what to do. And then they argue some more. And then they call each other names and screech and yell and attempt to act. It's awful. But I'm in luck, as I needed a film to kick off my Shittiest Films of 2010 list. I've found one.

Comments: As a child, I was frightened of nearly everything. I can't tell you how many hours of sleep I lost because of movies like Child's Play and Poltergeist (perhaps that's why I love horror movies now). But nothing freaked me the fuck out more when I was eleven years old and I sat down and watched "Home" one night. "Home" was one of the only episodes of The X-Files that was rated mature (the only other episode was Season Eight's "Via Negativa" I believe), and subsequently was banned from television after it aired. Living in Pennsylvania, I was sure that the Peacock family was going to arrive at my house every night to beat me to death with a baseball bat. Watching it again now, I find the episode to be pretty damn entertaining. As for the rest of the season, I felt it took a step back from Season Three. The show's still good, but the ideas for the self-contained episodes felt weak at times, and the overarching stories (along with the addition of Scully's cancer) are what held the season together. Other favorite episodes for me (besides "Home"), included both two-parters ("Tunguska" and "Terma," along with "Tempus Fugit" and "Max") and the comedy-themed episode "Small Potatoes" (which stars writer Darin Morgan, who wrote some of the greatest X-Files episodes, including "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'" and "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose"). In the end, Season Four serves up another great batch of episodes. It's well worth your time.

Comments: I actually saw Predators on Saturday night, but I went to the bar afterward and then was up early as hell the next day to go golfing. I then completely forgot about writing up a review for the film, which should tell you all you need to know about my thoughts on Predators. Bland, boring, and insignificant are pretty good adjectives to use. These sentiments were echoed back to me by the others I saw the film with. Off the top of my head, these were my two favorite moments of the film: the one dude who states that 5:00 is "bitch raping" time, and the mentally challenged man sitting behind me that yelled out "ain't that some shit" during a key moment at the end of the film. Yeah. If you need to see Predators, just rent it later.

Your mind is the scene of the crime.

[IMDb]

Comments: Inception is pretty fucking awesome, as I expected it would be. I don't really want to go over the plot that much, since it's much more fun to simply experience the film. But I will say that I am extremely impressed with Christopher Nolan (again), as not only did he direct the film, but he wrote one intriguing top-notch script (I did find it hard to empathize with the characters a bit; there's not a lot of development and Inception could be considered a little cold to the touch). I did have a few issues with the logic of the film, particularly toward the end (such as limbo, and how characters come and go; many of these are discussed in the IMDb's FAQ section for the film). However, it's the "good" kind of issues/confusion, much like when I watched Donnie Darko for the first time and had no idea what happened at the end, other than I loved the hell out of the movie. Anyway, Inception is definitely one of the best of the year so far, and well worth your time. It's a film that is going to demand multiple viewings, so be prepared. But it's an awesome ride.

Genre: Comedy | Horror
Running Time: 108 Minutes
MPAA Rating: Not Rated

[IMDb]

Comments: I have a definite weakness for low budget shit titles that I find at Saturday Matinee (like Night of the Pumpkin and Blitzkrieg: Escape from Stalag 69). Inbred Redneck Vampires definitely fits in with these films. It's made on a budget of about four beers and contains some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Unfortunately, unlike the other two films I mentioned, there's not enough gratuitous violence and nudity (except for an extremely large woman) to really make Inbred Redneck Vampires truly entertaining. But it actually is funny at times, and there's an extremely angry midget named Cletus that's awesome. With more of an exploitation vibe, this could have been a classic (relatively speaking).

[IMDb]

Comments: Shuttle was a surprisingly good film about a group of people abducted on a shuttle on the way home from the airport. I was a bit concerned at how director Edward Anderson planned to stretch this concept over an hour and forty-five minutes, but it worked out rather well. Sure, there's a few moments where characters make idiotic decisions only to further the script (I'm pretty sure there were at least five different times when a character or characters could have made a clean break). However, this is (sadly) a common occurrence in horror films anymore so I've come to expect it. Outside of that, I really enjoyed Shuttle. It's competently written and directed, and there's never much of a lull in the action. Even though the general concept has been done before, it's still worth a watch. Recommended.

Hell is for heroes.

[IMDb]

Comments: I was going to start the review by saying that watching 1968 Tunnel Rats ended my awesome streak of never having seen an Uwe Boll film. Then I realized that I've unfortunately seen BloodRayne. Anyway, I used to read a blog that I based The Musical Whorehouse's current design off of (it no longer exists, sadly), and I really enjoyed reading this gentleman's rants on films. But then one day, a four star (out of four) review appeared for 1968 Tunnel Rats from someone who usually shits all over Uwe Boll. Since then, I've been intrigued by the film, and now that I finally got around to watching it, it's much better than I expected. It certainly would have been received more positively had Boll's name not been attached. Sure, there's a few issues, but overall it's a decent film and not steaming pile of shit like some of Boll's other work. That's about as positive as I can get for a Boll film.

Directed by: James Mangold
Screenplay by: Patrick O'Neill

Genre: Action | Comedy | Thriller
Running Time: 109 Minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Viewed: Theater

[IMDb]

Comments: There seems to be an unending stream of middle-of-the-road blow-'em-up action movies this summer (The Losers, The A-Team). James Mangold's Knight and Day is no different. The film's not particularly good, but then again, it's not terrible. It works best when the film almost becomes a farce (actually, a parody almost). At times, when Tom Cruise does his crazy action stunts, they're done in a way that's funny rather than pulse-pounding adrenaline-fueled action. This works better for the film because the audience never takes it seriously. But this thought doesn't carry on through the rest of the film. Unfortunately, Knight and Day does nothing to distinguish itself from the plethora of mediocre films that have come out this summer. Hopefully, all that will change in five days, when we will be treated to Christopher Nolan's Inception. Until then, friends.

Comments: Normally, one of the appeals of watching shitty horror movies for me is ranting and raving about an idiotic script, where the dumbest or most bizarre choices are made. Unfortunately, in Mummy Maniac, nothing idiotic really occurs. Nothing at all really happens. Some fat dude dresses up like a cop, abducts a girl, talks to her, kills her, and wraps her head like a mummy. Do this seven times in a row, and you have yourself a horror film! It's dreadfully slow, boring, and awful. There's nothing even remotely fun about Mummy Maniac. If you feel the need to watch this movie, do yourself a favor and break the disc in half. Use one half to slit your wrists. You'll be better served that way.

[IMDb]

Comments: I wasn't planning on renting more films (the four below are the first movies I've rented in months), but after walking around my local Family Video I decided that tonight should officially be Shitty Horror Movie Night (especially when they're two for a dollar). I haven't had one of those in a while. So anyway, I picked up Skeleton Crew based solely on the fact that it had an awesome DVD cover (it's very similar to the poster above). And for the most part, the film wasn't half bad (I was thinking along the lines of a two-star rating). That is, until the last act kicked in (I'm about to ruin most of the ending for you) and Skeleton Crew becomes laughably bad. The film's about a crew making a Hostel-type picture in an abandoned mental institution. The director's gone mad, and he's starting to kill everyone. After running around for a bit, the characters find footage of themselves - what we've seen throughout the film - in a studio in the attic. Thus, they logically conclude that they're currently in the horror film Skeleton Crew - the one the viewer is currently watching. And they all accept this as fact without any doubts (they even start making decisions based on how horror films work). The scene shows the characters watching that exact scene the viewer is watching with them in it on a monitor; it's like the shittiest Charlie Kaufman film ever made. The quote in the scene at the end of the credits sums Skeleton Crew up nicely: "That sucked. There wasn't even any tits in it!" (This was said in a theater as the film ended, and the mad director was there, ready to kill again. Oh noes!)

Comments: I will admit to being a little disappointed in Chan-wook Park's Thirst. The only other film of Park's I've seen is his excellent Oldboy, which I loved (I do own the rest of the Vengeance Trilogy, but just haven't gotten around to watching Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance or Lady Vengeance yet). Combined with the fact that Thirst received excellent reviews, I was very eager to see the film. Surprisingly, Thirst is much more of a bizarre love story than a horror film. Sure, vampirism is present throughout and a focal point of the film, but it's not typical by any means. None of this would have affected my interest in the film, but Thirst plods along for much of running time, with only a few captivating scenes here and there. It's a good film, but with a bit of a tighter pace I think Park could have improved his work. I'm sure many will disagree with me, and perhaps I will appreciate the film more on subsequent viewings. But for now, Thirst is simply good, not great.

Comments: Land of the Lost was pretty much universally shit on upon its release. I had no desire to see the film, but at the same time I liked the combination of Will Ferrell and Kenny Powers Danny McBride and figured that I'd get at least a few laughs out of the film. For the most part, I was right. Now I've never seen the original Land of the Lost, but the plot of the this movie is fucking weird as hell (after a quick jaunt over to Wikipedia, I found that the film actually is similar to the original television show). Also, the character of Cha-Ka is dreadful and Jar Jar Binks in nature. Beyond that, there's a few jokes that worked, and I can't say my time was completely wasted. Still, you'd probably be wise to look elsewhere for entertainment.

[IMDb]

Comments: I remember watching the trailer for Adam last year (unfortunately, it took me this long to finally watch the film); I was instantly drawn to the story as I tend to enjoy romantic dramas similar to this one. But Adam is a bit different, as the title character has Asperger Syndrome, which is essentially a higher-functioning autism. Adam is excellently played by Hugh Dancy (the rest of the cast is fantastic as well), and I have read several reviews stating how accurately the film portrays the disease. There's also an underlying sadness to the entire proceedings, which is probably why I loved Adam as much as I did; most of my favorite films are depressing. But don't misunderstand, the film's not a downer - it's a wonderfully touching and excellent look at an unusual relationship. It's certainly worth an hour and forty minutes of your time.

Comments: Despite the fact that Hot Tub Time Machine didn't garner the most positive reviews when it was released, I was never really swayed from my desire to see the film. I loved the cast, and with the complete absurdist humor (Craig Robinson stating that "it must be some kind of... hot tub time machine" while looking directly at the camera), I figured the film was going to be a riot. Unfortunately, I was severely disappointed at the first half of the film. The script was scatterbrained as hell, and it felt like every other line was dubbed in during post-production (that's something I've started to notice more and more recently; it annoys the shit out of me). Luckily, once a general purpose is established for the film (going back to the present - or is it going forth to the present?), Hot Tub Time Machine starts to become a cohesive film that really had me entertained. It's got a surprisingly touching ending that made me appreciate the film much more than I would have originally. And while it may not be for everyone, I certainly enjoyed the flick. Isn't that all that matters?

Comments: I pretty much use my check card for everything. I usually never have "real" money on me, so the ten bucks I've had in my wallet has been eating me alive for the last week or so. I don't know why, I'm just weird. Anyway, I was at my local second-hand electronics store today, and Sorority Row was just staring at me. I knew it wasn't going to be good, but this is the kind of crap I like, and it was only $5 (the rest of my money went to the first Final Destination, as I already owned the second and third installments and my OCD dictated that I needed this one as well). Sorority Row itself was generic with a laughable plot, but I won't deny that I enjoyed myself. I was particularly pleased that the film was actually rated R, as it seems perfect for that teenie-bopper PG-13 rating (but you'll never hear me complain about extra violence and some boobs here and there). It's competently directed and generally well-paced (the last act tends to drag a bit). You pretty much know what you're going to get with something like Sorority Row, so if this is the shit you like to watch, you'll probably be entertained.
