Blood Games (1990)

Blood Games (1990)

Directed by: Tanya Rosenberg
Screenplay by: Craig Clyde, James Hennessy, and George Saunders

Genre: Action | Thriller
Running Time: 90 Minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Viewed: Netflix Watch Instantly

The hunters became the hunted.

[IMDb]

Comments: Blood Games is without a doubt one of those terrible yet undeniably awesome movies. The film follows a traveling women's baseball team that, while wearing as skimpy outfits as possible, completely dismantles some local hicks in a baseball field that hasn't been maintained in five years. A dispute over money owed from the game sets off a horrific series of events, including murders, rape, and a shitload of bad acting (to be fair, that started before said dispute). In essence, Blood Games is A League of Their Own meets I Spit on Your Grave. And it was rather great (and awful). To be honest, and this will only make me look more depraved, but a little more skin and violence could really have elevated the film in my eyes. But as it stands, Blood Games is still somewhat bad ass.

Lock up your fathers.

[IMDb]

Comments: I don't think there was much of a doubt that I'd pick up Troma's latest, Father's Day, soon after it was released on Blu-ray. It's a nasty comedy/exploitation flick often compared to Hobo with a Shotgun (a film I loved) and comes in a sweet package (a 4-disc Blu-ray/DVD/soundtrack bonanza). I happened to have some gift card money for Amazon I received for my birthday, so I was all over this. Luckily, Father's Day delivers what I was expecting (for the most part).

The film revolves around a killer that goes around grotesquely raping, murdering, and often de-penising fathers. Yep. (There's actually an extremely heavy homoerotic undertone to the entire film.) The dialogue is pretty funny at times, but I did feel the premise was stretched a tad thin; a few parts could definitely have been shortened. And while it's not as good as Hobo with a Shotgun (even if it's quite a bit more nasty and over-the-top), the film is really well made and looks fantastic for a $10,000 budget.

I think there was some kind of issue between the filmmaking collective Astron-6 (all the guys listed above) and Troma, which saw Father's Day delayed for quite some time. Lloyd Kaufman even half-trashes them in the special features because they didn't want their behind-the-scenes documentary on the disc. I'm entirely too lazy to look up the whole story, but I've also read there's another cut out there somewhere. If that's the case and it gets released at some point, I'll definitely check that shit out.

White skin on the black market.

Comments: The Big Doll House is the last film from Shout! Factory's The Women in Cages Collection (which consists of three Roger Corman-produced WIP films) that I needed to watch. It's along the lines of the other film in that collection that came out the same year, Women in Cages. Both tease more graphic and deprave acts than they actually produce, but both are reasonably well-made and worth a watch. My biggest complaint with the film was the schizo relationship between the main characters. The group of six women go from harming each other to friends and back again for essentially the whole movie. It was weird. But otherwise, The Big Doll House wasn't half-bad. No recommendations here, because just by looking at the film you'll know whether or not you want to watch it. Quality doesn't really matter with a title like this, right?

This sister is one bad mother.

[IMDb]

Comments: Apparently, it's watch movies on Netflix that are unoriginal and blatantly rip off other films. Tonight it was Nude Nuns with Big Guns, a film that takes numerous cues from both Quentin Tarantino's and Robert Rodriguez's recent output and mashes it all together to make a completely unoriginal flick. The violence in the film is also hilariously bad. There are real fucking auteurs out there with blood; you know, those guys that can take a low budget and turn it into a bloody masterpiece. Joseph Guzman and company are not those people. He took what was likely a $20 budget and made the film look like it was shot for $10. (I also like that when our main Nude Nun shoots somebody, they get hit right between the eyes every time.) But, on the bright side, the film's extremely exploitative and blasphemous, two things I always appreciate. The women do look really trashy, but for some reason the feeling that these girls were just pulled out of some shady five-dollar-a-lap-dance strip club only compliments the overall feel and look of the movie.

In summation, Nude Nuns with Big Guns is a terrible movie. You should watch it.

Payback's a bitch!

[IMDb]

Comments: Run! Bitch Run! is a terrible rip-off (or homage, as I'm sure the filmmakers would call it) of several films, notably Grindhouse and I Spit on Your Grave (and notably the latter film, as the rape scene in the woods is extremely reminiscent of the '80s cult classic). The revenge aspect was piss poor also, as the film's budgetary limitations were extremely evident, often cutting away before any real violence occurs. I did like the leading lady, a somewhat strange yet enticing looking woman (I generally like my women odd in exploitation films), who wasn't... exposed... nearly enough throughout. The rest of the cast looked like it was picked out of a trailer park. Yeah, Run! Bitch Run! isn't very good, but there's some part of me that enjoyed it. I can't really recommend it though.

Comments: I've seen more than my share of "women in prison" flicks over the years, and I can say that I enjoy the overall sleaziness associated with the genre (because I'm a dirtbag, essentially). That's exactly why I'd pick something like Women in Cages to watch on Netflix instead of one of the quality films I mentioned in my previous post. And to my surprise, Women in Cages was pretty good. While being rather vile in some sections, the film lacked the overall graphic violence and depravity that I've seen in others, but the story was solid enough that my attention was held throughout. Plus, it's always nice to see Pam Grier (even as the antagonist) taking names and kicking asses, particularly because the protagonist of the story was a nutcase and super annoying (she also seemed to be conveniently covered in her nude scenes, which is a giant no-no in WIP movies!). Anyway, fans of the genre know what they're getting with a film like Women in Cages, and surprisingly, it's not bad.

Hitch-Hike (1977)

Hitch-Hike (1977)

Directed by: Pasquale Festa Campanile
Screenplay by: Ottavio Jemma, Aldo Crudo, and Pasquale Festa
  Campanile

Genre: Crime | Drama | Thriller
Running Time: 104 Minutes
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Viewed: Owned DVD

[IMDb]

Comments: I think I would've liked Hitch-Hike a lot more had it not been so mean spirited. That sounds weird coming from me as I generally like some nasty over-the-top shit. However, the way this film was playing out, I just expected something a little different than what I got. Franco Nero and Corinne Cléry star as a husband and wife returning from a camping/hunting trip. Nero plays an alcoholic asshole, who has little to no redeeming factors. Along comes David Hess (Mr. Krug Stillo himself), a dangerous bank robber on the run who takes the couple hostage, using them to escape to Mexico.

The way I expected the film to play out was for Nero to have a revelation and realize the error of his ways. There's this great scene toward the end of the film where Hess is raping Cléry (that's not the great part), and Nero, who is tied up, has this distraught yet angry look on his face; it's great. You just feel that he is going to avenge his wife and be the hero. Yet, as the film goes on, Nero just becomes more and more of an asshole. This, in turn, ends up being the whole point of the film, which sort of bummed me out.

However, the real star of Hitch-Hike is David Hess. He's the fucking man and is great in this film. Hess has been pretty damn funny in every interview I've watched; I was disappointed when I heard he passed away last year. I've only seen three of his films, and he's essentially the same character in all of them (this, The Last House on the Left, and House on the Edge of the Park), but I'll be damned if he wasn't the best thing about all of them. Rest in peace you glorious bastard.

Comments: A few random thoughts:

- Jessica Alba CGI nudity is the bane of my existence. It's almost as bad as her acting.

- On the other hand, and even though her hair covers most of it, Lindsay Lohan's tig 'ol bitties are nice and fine. That whole Playboy shoot was shit, but no matter how coked out she gets, I still wouldn't kick her out of bed.

- And since I'm being all pervy, I have no idea who that naked Mexican chick was at the beginning of the film, but god-motherfucking-damn.

- Don Johnson FTW. I was really sad he and Cheech Marin didn't get any scenes together, being an old Nash Bridges fan.

- I liked the plethora of big names strewn throughout Machete, even down to Steven Seagal. It was fun. All the film was missing was a Michael Madsen cameo.

- Unfortunately, Machete's not as good as something like Hobo with a Shotgun, but it's still a really fun piece of work. In fact, the two would have made a great double feature for a Grindhouse 2. Dammit, now I wish they would've made a second installment.

Sugar Cookies (1973)

Sugar Cookies (1973)

Screenplay by: Theodore Gershuny and Lloyd Kaufman

Genre: Drama | Horror
Running Time: 89 Minutes
MPAA Rating: X
Viewed: Owned DVD

Soft... sweet... satisfying.

[IMDb]

Comments: Yeah, this wasn't very good. If you think back a week, I was entranced by Lynn Lowry in Score. I liked the movie and I liked her, so I did a little research and found out she was in an early Lloyd Kaufman-produced film, Sugar Cookies, so I picked it up from Amazon. It also didn't hurt that she was nude in the film, which, as it turns out, was probably the best thing about the movie (mainly because she was barely clothed throughout; think of her as being the opposite of a "never-nude" Tobias in Arrested Development). Seriously. A lot.

There's also a story in Sugar Cookies somewhere, but it's muddled and drawn out - I could've cared less. If you're interested in a little '70s exploitation fare for the exploitation alone, you're in the right place. Otherwise, it's probably best to steer clear of these Cookies.

Genre: Action | Crime | Fantasy | Thriller
Running Time: 104 Minutes
MPAA Rating: R
Viewed: Owned Blu-ray

Comments: I'm feeling a little frisky, so let's do a little something different...

Cons:
- Nicolas Cage. The man seemingly will make any movie offered to him. What happened to the guy that made Adaptation. and Matchstick Men? Not only does Cage continue to churn out shit movies, but his acting is beyond terrible. There are so many actors that would've played this role better.
- The special effects. Holy shit, I've seen better effects on SyFy made-for-TV movies. Seriously.
- The fact that Drive Angry feels like it's trying way too hard to be a cult/exploitation classic. So much of the action and dialogue feels forced, which is never a good thing.
- Amber Heard doesn't get naked. Enough said.

Pros:
- William Fichtner. I've always liked the guy as an actor, and he's completely kick-ass in this. His delivery and mannerisms are funny as hell throughout.
- Nicolas Cage having a shootout while still "inside" Charlotte Ross. Granted, this falls into the third listing in the "Cons" category, but come on - this scene's still awesome.
- Fuck, the special effects are so god-awful I feel like bringing it up again.
- Amber Heard. OK, so she doesn't get naked, but she's hot as hell in the film.

Drive Angry is a genuinely fun film. With some tweaking and a legitimate lead, this could have been the cult classic Patrick Lussier was aiming for. Instead, it's much more of a guilty pleasure. But if you're into this kind of flick, I'd recommend giving it a watch. You could do worse.

The film looked amazing, and all I could think about was how awesome Hobo would look in my Blu-ray collection. But I had read more than a few negative reviews, so despite the fact that I love films like this, I figured I could be in for a disappointment. Boy, was I wrong. Hobo with a Shotgun is fucking amazing! You have bad guys that use a flame thrower on a school bus of children whilst listening to "Disco Inferno." You have Rutger Hauer taking names and kicking ass. You have quotes like this: "When life gives you razor blades, you make a baseball bat covered in razor blades." Pure awesomeness.

In the midst of life we are in death.

[IMDb]

Comments: C'mon, Netflix. You can't dangle shit like Sacred Flesh in front of me and expect me not to watch, despite how wretchedly horrible it is. And it's horrible. It does seem like Nigel Wingrove is actually trying to make some sort of transcendental psycho-sexual film, but when every actress you use has huge implants, your films tend to come off as shitty softcore porn. And it's a fucking film about nuns. How many nuns do you know that have implants? Probably not many. Scratch that, how many nuns do know that are less than fifty-years-old? Actually, how many goddamn nuns do you know at all?

If you must see Sacred Flesh, may I suggest using the fast-forward button to get to the good parts (and there's a couple). But I can't recommend sitting through any of the other crap. There's just too much talking in between the really important and meaningful scenes.

Blood. Crime. Weed. Moonshine.

[IMDb]

Comments: So I bought a bunch of pre-viewed DVDs the other day from Hollywood Video's website (8 for $20, plus a $5 off coupon - I ordered 16 DVDs for $33 shipped) and Stash just happened to be one of the discs I ordered. I won't lie, I knew nothing about the film; I ordered it simply because there was a chick in underwear chained up on the cover. And let me tell you: it's awful. It looks like Stash was made on a budget of about $6.50. All of the acting is horrendous and the camerawork and direction is even worse. To top it off, Stash barely qualifies as a horror/exploitation film at all; sure there's some chicks chained up in a basement, but the film follows the cops and parents trying to find them more so than anything else. All of that means Stash is boring as shit. Barely any nudity and violence makes Greg a sad boy.

The worst part about the entire thing is that the disc was scratched to shit (being a used copy). The other DVDs I ordered from Hollywood Video are fine, but this one kept skipping 20 minutes in. I tried everything (including boiling the DVD), but nothing worked. The film actually showed some promise in the beginning, so I ordered another copy from a seller on Amazon. Bare with me on this one. Hollywood Video has horrid customer service, so I didn't feel like dicking around since I got such a good deal on the other discs. Paying a few extra bucks and ordering a good copy from Amazon was no big deal to me. Then I got the bright idea to burn the disc, as my DVD drive reads scratched discs well. This worked like a charm, and I was able to watch the movie on a DVD-R. Now I desperately don't want to spend any more money on Stash, so I contacted the seller on Amazon and tried to cancel my order. Haven't heard back yet. I am a dumb ass.

Images in a Convent (1979)

Images in a Convent (1979)

Directed by: Joe D'Amato
Screenplay by: Joe D'Amato

Genre: Drama
Running Time: 93 Minutes
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Viewed: Owned DVD

[IMDb]

Comments: Well, everything that made The Nuns of Saint Archangel lacking was made up for (and then some) with Joe D'Amato's Images in a Convent. The story is a bit lacking compared to the other two films in the Nunsploitation collection, but that's never a reason to watch a D'Amato film. Images in a Convent is actually better than most D'Amato films of the same ilk (Porno Holocaust, Erotic Nights of the Living Dead) but not nearly as good as he showed he could be at times (Beyond the Darkness). Anyway, now that I've concluded Exploitation Digital's Nunsploitation collection, I think I'd recommend it to those that are interested. It's certainly better than the SS Hell Pack, which Exploitation Digital released two years ago (but that is most definitely not going to stop me from picking up the SS Hell Pack II, which comes out in just over a week). The films in the Nunsploitation collection are generally decent, and each has its own merits for watching. But, Images in a Convent is not for the faint of heart. Just be warned.

Running Time: 103 Minutes
MPAA Rating: Unrated

[IMDb]

Comments: Uh... what? I have a hard time believing that Exploitation Digital couldn't find a film better suited for the Nunsploitation collection (something like Convent of Sinners). Sure, The Nuns of Saint Archangel is a decent film, but it's hardly exploitative, and it's much more of a standard dramatic film about some corrupt nuns. The only interesting parts are at the end of the film, where the nuns stand trial ("The church is inhuman! And it made me inhuman too, like you!") and are tortured. While the DVD is unrated, there are a few scenes which felt like they were cut, and they all occurred during scenes where the nuns were without their habits. Overall, The Nuns of Saint Archangel is an average film. If you can get through the somewhat boring and tedious first half, it ends up becoming an alright flick. Just don't expect much of anything in terms of nudity, violence, or blasphemy - give or take a few scenes. It's just not that nunsploitative after all.

The True Story of the Nun of Monza (1980)

The True Story of the Nun of Monza (1980)

Directed by: Bruno Mattei
Screenplay by: Claudio Fracassi

Genre: Drama
Running Time: 93 Minutes
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Viewed: Owned DVD

[IMDb]

Comments: I was out yesterday to pick up the just-released 2-disc Dead Snow. While perusing the horror section, I found Exploitation Digital's Nunsploitation collection for $20. The only film I had heard of in the collection was Joe D'Amato's Images in a Convent, and I've wanted to see that film for some time. It usually runs $15-$20 by itself, so picking up this set was a no-brainer. I decided to save Images until the end, so up first was Bruno Mattei's The True Story of the Nun of Monza. I've seen a few Mattei films before, and they've generally sucked (although I long for the day when I can watch his version Terminator II and Jaws 5). Monza had its moments, but it eventually fell short. The film started out with explicit horse sex(?!), and I have no idea why that was necessary. I'm not sure what's worse, horse on horse or woman on horse (Joe D'Amato's Emanuelle in America). But, on the other side, there are plenty of blasphemous moments in Monza that make me giggle. There's a scene where a drunken priest is dressed as Satan while hearing a confession from a nun, where he tells her how bad he wants to fuck her. There's also a scene where the Mother Superior is semi-raped on the altar. Still, all that awesomeness can't make up for much of the rest of the film being boring as hell (I made a funny!). While I would only recommend the film to genre-lovers, I still may recommend the Nunsploitation set based on the quality of the other films. Stay tuned.

Genre: Fantasy | Horror
Running Time: 85 Minutes
MPAA Rating: Unrated

A God-awful love story.

[IMDb]

Comments: I've been looking forward to Frank Henenlotter's Bad Biology for awhile now. I watched the trailer some months ago, and even though I wasn't completely sure what it was about, it looked right up my alley. The image of women with vagina faces was a lasting one, although it turned out they were just masks (sadly). The story of Bad Biology revolves around a woman named Jennifer, who was born with seven (7) clitorises. She feeds from having orgasms, so naturally she runs into Batz, who has long injected his junk with animal steroids so that it's now a grotesque two-foot long beast. Bad Biology is as bizarre and unsettling as it sounds. The only problem is that it's rarely as funny and entertaining as it should be. The film made me chuckle in spots (the line where Jennifer speaks about how God wants to fuck her is great), but Henenlotter takes the film a bit too seriously at times. There's several rambling monologues (mainly voice-overs) that take the fun out of the film. Plus, the acting leaves a little to be desired (well, a lot to be desired), so Bad Biology never lives up to how awesome it could've been. My review shouldn't really sway anyone anyway, as those wanting to watch the film will do so anyway simply because of the plot and visuals, and those who don't want to watch it certainly won't after reading this. Unless, of course, they love two-foot mutant cocks.

Comments: Holy fucking shit. I Spit on Your Corpse, I Piss on Your Grave is without a doubt the worst film I have seen in years, perhaps in my life. Despite all of the gratuitous nudity (provided by fat men and an ugly bull-dyke with a '70s-style bush) and graphic violence, I wanted to rip my eyes out while slamming my head into the wall. Why, you ask? Because our wonderful director Eric Stanze, who will no doubt go on to win many Academy Awards, is a gigantic pretentious douchebag hack. He apparently decided that he wanted to make an "artsy" exploitation film, which means that we have a 10 minute segment (of a goddamn 70 minute film) in the beginning of random shots of a cemetery with depressing music. But we're not done there, no. We then have more shots of trees, pipes and basements, and people at odd angles (because we're edgy and cool filmmakers!) spread throughout the film. To cap it all off, our fearless lead, hairy bush bull-dyke, proceeds to violate herself with what looks like the end of a broom, in extreme close-up detail. I vomited in my mouth a little a lot. I can't believe I thought this would break up the repetitiveness of the Friday the 13th series. I would rather watch Halloween: Resurrection 20 times in a row than watch this dreck. I hope Eric Stanze gets AIDS.

Behind bars no one can hear you scream!

[IMDb]

Comments: Behind Bare Bars, which Oswaldo de Oliveira made before Amazon Jail, is definitely more deserving of its "X" rating, but I really didn't find the film as entertaining. It lacked some of the goofiness that made Amazon Jail so unintentionally hysterical. The film was just incredibly stupid in some areas, and there's never a clear cut "heroine" with whom we are supposed to cheer for. I thought it was the three girls who escaped, but instead they immediately murdered a couple so they could eat and steal their clothes. So that made a lot of sense. Unfortunately, no one is raped to death at the end of the film, but it did turn into a (strange and weird) porn in the last the last ten minutes, which included a fat hairy man with an incredibly fake looking penis (apparently he was too "shy" or the thought of a hot lady giving him a blow-j repulsed him). All in all, while Bare Behind Bars isn't one of the best WIP films, I've certainly seen worse (those were the ones that didn't turn into a porn in the last ten minutes).

Comments: Ah, yes. This is the kind of trash that I like at the Musical Whorehouse. I have such a stockpile of trashy/sleazy/shitty/awesome '70s and '80s horror and exploitation films that I have yet to get around to watching. Why? I don't know, but it's about damn time I dive into them. Amazon Jail has been panned just about everywhere I've read about it. A lot of people have stated that Oswaldo de Oliveira's previous WIP flick, Bare Behind Bars was better in many ways (I have yet to see it, but I will... next), but I actually enjoyed Amazon Jail. It had enough ridiculousness to entertain me in between the, uh... sleazier aspects of the film. Like when you're caged in a wooden prison, the best way to get out is to throw a Molotov cocktail at the door. While you're still inside. But hey, it worked for the prisoners. The film does end on a happy note, however. Well, after two women are gang-raped to death (??). Yeah, they were surrounded by five guys or so, and then they just stopped moving. And no one seemed to care. I do recommend the film for genre fans despite it's high asking price (good luck finding it for under $20 without a sale... which is why I plead the fifth). It's definitely a fun (if you're fucking weird like me) and entertaining film to watch.
